Resting system on the way to work for urban youth

We paid attention to the daily lives of youths living in the busy Seoul and overly competitive society. In particular, the MZ generation has gained a lot of information via online and has come to compare themselves with others easily. So youths try to invest their time in self-development even in their spare time as they are stimulated by the edited daily lives of social media influencers. Humans instinctively pursue the balance between work and rest, but young people in Seoul are putting off rest for the sake of developing life. Daily life without rest, which is directly related to health, harms young people, and the future of the city is becoming blurry.

For office workers who find it difficult to break the rules of daily life, they must relieve the stress that they receive on a daily basis. However, no one has actively tried to reform the entrenched atmosphere of a familiar space. This rather makes people turn away from the desolateness of the city, and the public transportation they often use is a representative example of a space that pushes them further into desolateness. To solve this, ‘positive changes in emotions’ should be presented. Persistent and positive emotions do not come from strong pleasures, but from a pure heart that values the object. Positive emotions are powerful enough to turn a stressful space into a relaxing space.

The object of attachment is given to the subway, which is a typical stressful space in the daily routine of office workers. While attachment to objects arises from familiarity, attachment to growing life arises from empathy. Plants are living organisms, while providing natural benefits to city dwellers. In addition, people directly or indirectly give positive influence and get a response back by participating in the raising of plants. The communion created through mutual interaction relieves their stress.
The ‘Meongle’, a resting system on the way to work, that we have proposed, leads to a human city with a healthy urban structure through active participation of citizens in public facilities. When people look at the plants they support while waiting for the subway with satisfaction, the space on the way to work, which used to be dull and dry, will be reborn as a real resting area.
After all, the citizens of the city are not just people who use what has been made, but who participate in the facilities and build the city together. Citizens will participate in the public sphere through ‘Meongle’, contributing their positive influences to the society.
